Practice Journal - Week 1 Goals

Subscribe to my feed! It’s free, easy to do and makes me happy!

  1. Key of the week - C Major - all studies will be in this key.
  2. Map out arpeggio, pentatonic and chord form associated with the seven diatonic modes.  With all 3, look for color tones to build out lines and chord tones.
  3. Technique - 20 minutes every day - linear (10 minutes) and Angular (10 minutes). I'm backing mm down to 100 bpm and using 16th notes. This is an easy speed, but I need to start observing where the tension starts in my right arm (right now, I really feel it at 120+bpm 16ths).
  4. Sight Reading - 20 minutes every day
  5. Ear Training - 20 minutes (10 minutes interval recognition and 10 minutes pitch matching with my voice)
  6. Vibrato - 5 minutes, one note, every day. Work on subtle, aggressive, slow, rapid, BB style, etc.
  7. Trills - 1 minute each finger grouping (1+2, 1+3, 1+4, 2+3, 2+4, 3+4). Strive for even tone on both the hammer and pull. Work to build endurance.
  8. Cmajor Modes - Review, intervals, 2 and 3 note studies on adjacent and non-adjacent string sets
  9. Arpeggio Review - Maj 7, Min 7, Dom 7, Min7b5 - all inversions (this needs the most work - my arps have fallen behind the last few months with regard to technical ability to pull them off cleanly at high tempos)
  10. Bass Lines - Technique and creating a new groove, every day
  11. Song Transcription - KWS "While We Cry" and Wayne Shorters "Fall"
