Had a good day of practice yesterday. Got everything in except for working out of the Jazzology book and the "Let it Be" solo.
Picked "Straight, No Chaser" as my tune to work on. I found an Eb and a Bb version. Worked the head up yesterday and will start working on comping/improvising over the tune. It is a blues in Bb (changes below).
Did ear training, but did not have my Beatles CD at work with "Let it Be". Will start that today.
Straight, No Chaser (Thelonious Monk)
Bb7 / Eb7 / Bb7 / Bb7
Eb7 / Eb7 / Bb7 / Dm7 G7
Cm7 / F7 / Bb9 G7/Cm7 F7
I / IV / I / I
IV / IV / I / ii V (of C)
ii / V / I VI / ii V
For the first four measures, it is a typical quick change blues (I/IV/I/I).
The middle four measures follow the norm for measures 5, 6 and 7. Measure 8 introduces a ii V change leading to the Cm7 in measure 9 (IV/IV/I/ii V leading to Cm7).
The last four measures shows a ii V in Bb in measures 9 and 10, followed by a I VI / ii V progression leading back to the Bb in measure 1 (ii / V / I VI / ii V).
