Widgets, widgets, widgets...

If you do not know what a widget is, here is one of several widget definitions found by Google.

"A standardized on-screen representation of a control that may be manipulated by the user."

Or simply put, a cool little button you can add to your browser or desktop to do cool things...

Segue over, now ... for the rest of the story (a little nod to ole' Paul Harvey)

I found two cool widgets this week, a internet guitar tab finder and tuner.

Guitar Tab FinderGuitar-Tab-Finder

For me, I regularly search the net for tab. My searches usually goes something like:
1. Hit Google or Yahoo
2. Type in a band name or song name with a "+" tab modifier
3. Scan through the first page looking for relevant results
4. Click on said result and yada yada yada

You know the rest.

So, when I found the Guitar Tab Finder Widget, I gave it a try and found it speeds up finding even the most difficult tabs (i.e. Bavarian waltz #9).

There are several tab search engines built in (Ultimate Guitar, 911 Tabs, MX tabs, etc). If you want to search all, hit it. If you have a favorite, you can select your favorite to be your one stop search.

This is a nice tool if you practice at your computer or spend time downloading tab.

Guitar-tuner-widgetTuner

I would say that tuners are pretty affordable today. But, on the off chance you do not have one, can't find it, batteries are dead, friend has it, brother broke it, etc (all actual reasons i've heard why my students have not used their tuners), then here is a widget for you.

The Tuner Widget will play the notes for each string E A D G B E as well as Drop D tuning (D A D G B E). Yes, you will have to use your ear to pitch match, but the benefits are a tuned instrument and some ear training to boot. Give it a shot!

I don't use very many widgets, but when I find cool widgets like these, I use them often.

If you've found something cool or useful, let me know!
