Yeah, but what's stopping you?

Was looking through 9rules today and found a discussion on "What song do you wish you could play?"

Well, we all have songs we wish we could play, I do, you do, we all do....

But as I was reading the comments on that thread, I started thinking "Yeah, you wish you could play that song ... but what's stopping you from doing it?"

Regardless of what the answer might be...

I don't know how to play...

I just started playing...

I don't have time to learn a song that hard...

I don't have the technique to play that song...

Insert your reasons here...

I have a simple response to all of these ... So What!

If you don't know how to play, take lessons, (I know a really good studio in Little Rock that gives guitar and bass lessons called Little Rock Jams - I can put a good word in to the owner for ya'), buy books and learn from them, get your old crazy uncle to teach you - just do something to start moving to your "wish" of playing your song.

If you just started playing, set goals and practice to meet those goals. Each goal should target a need to play the song (i.e. learning the chords of the song, the solo, singing and playing at the same time). Once your goals are set, practice and work hard and meeting those goals.

I don't have the technique to play that song. Well my friend, let me re-introduce you to my little friend... The metronome. There is no magic pill or potion that will give you awesome technique, you have to work for it. Everyone you hear that has good technique, worked for it. But hey, working for technique (i.e. practicing) is not like digging a ditch is it? Not hardly.

Insert your reasons here... Whatever you came up with, you can do what you want to do. You just have to put the time in to learn it. And believe me, the joy you get from playing something you once thought was "impossible" is really nice.

In closing, i'm going to use some inspirational words from Townie (Waterboy)

"You can do eeeeet!" (but you have to work for it!)

Now, go practice!
