Dan-Fogelberg-playing-guitarIf you have not heard, Dan Fogelberg passed away this weekend at the age of 56. The cause of  death was prostate cancer.

Dan was a gifted songwriter that relied as much on a good story as he did on a good hook.

Just last week, a student of mine and I were discussing some favorite songs. Bob mentioned Fogelberg's 1981 hit "Same Old Lang Syne" and we both said the same thing ... "the snow turned into rain". If you've heard the song, but have not listened to the lyrics, you can read them here. This is one of the few songs that I still stop to enjoy every time it comes on.

It would seem fitting with his passing and with New Years Eve approaching, to take a stab at learning this great song. For anyone interested, here is the tab for "Same Old Lang Syne", as found on ultimate guitar.

Here is a nice holiday video with "Same Old Lang Syne" as the backing track. Sit back and enjoy a great song!

Let's drink a toast to innocence,
Let's drink a toast to now.
Let's drink a toast to time
Reliving in our eloquence, another auld lang syne.

The lyric in question is cheesy but rich and connects to genuine emotions nonetheless. I hate when people younger than me die. Best wishes in Spirit Country, Dan.
