Go with me, back in time, to 1987. Surfing with the Alien was released and guitar as we knew it had changed.

If you don't know his background, Joe has the teaching pedigree to end all teaching pedigrees. He taught Steve Vai, Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and Larry LaLonde (Primus) to name a few notable guitarists.

Beyond that, he has released album after album of insane guitar oriented music over the last 20 years. If you like rock, ballads or just some strange-beautiful music, then you'll dig Satriani!

More recently, he has spearheaded the G3 tours by teaming up with the likes of Eric Johnson, Vai, John Petrucci, Paul Gilbert and Yngwie Malmsteen. The G3 tours are pure heaven for anyone that plays guitar or bass.

But back to 1987 for a moment...

Joe's columns in the old "Guitar for the Practicing Musician" exposed me to modes for the first time (it would be a while before they started to stick though). And to this day, when he has an interview or article in one of the guitar rags, you will always learn something from him.

Plus, he makes the best "fish mouth" guitar faces in the land! Most often when he's about to abuse the whammy!
