Hey everyone!

Here is another new series we're doing in 2008. Pentatonic Power.

We're going to give you some fresh ideas to play using our old friend, the Pentatonic scale. We'll give you the tab, an example of the idea played at tempo and at 1/2 speed and a backing track to practice with.

Tune up and have fun!

Approaching Pentatonics with Chromaticism

Do you ever feel like you're running through your pentatonic patterns the same every day? Ever wonder how other players you hear make the same scales you use sound so "notey"?

Well, try out this pattern I came up with. It is played using pattern #1 on the five pentatonic shapes. Play it over and over until you get your chops up and then use it when your improvising to start a nice run. Just remember, if you are new to the chromatic approach that you don't want to land on ANY note that is not in the scale. the added chromatic notes are there only as passing tones. Use them tastefully and have fun!

This is just a Am7 groove played with a funk style. Practice the lick slowly and then work up to tempo.
