Hey guys. I just wanted to share a little piece of an article by Kenny Werner about the difference between practicing and playing.


In practicing, when one should be improving their overall game, looking for imperfections and mastering them, or looking for those chords, lines or rhythms that elude one - one suddenly abandons those targeted searches and simply "plays." there is nothing wrong with playing, of course, but once one has moved from practicing to playing, one is again reinforcing the old, not establishing the new.  Playing while practicing is not practicing in the sense that it is not achieving any upgrade in the information that currently runs through you. And then when one plays one expects those things that were only practiced briefly, or weren't practiced at all, to manifest as if by magic. This demand is unreasonable given the fact that one's practicing did not follow through on finding and mastering the new information.
