I have a magazine interview where Tomo says this, but I thought he was joking. I can post it if you are interested.

Yeah, sure you can post it. Honestly, I haven't read that article...

I didn't say it cause Tomo said it, it's such a mean thing to say right? Lol

Okay, I half-assed looked for it yesterday and couldn't find it, but I swear I have it somewhere. I sent it to a friend a few months ago to see what she thought about it and she said Tomo was probably joking. Will look more throughly later tonight.

    It's toward the bottom.
TM:...The same thing when you hear a melody in your head and you don’t know any scales, you can put the time into it, like Jared - he doesn’t know how to play the guitar at all - but he gets there because he’s willing to put 30 hours into a song.

K2K: Jared doesn’t know how to play guitar?
TM: Hardly. Hardly. He knows how to play his style, but from a traditional approach, not at all.

    K2K: Are you serious?
TM: Not at all. But he is willing to put the time into finding that melody. Practicing... the only advantage that that has is, if you hear that melody in your head, you’ll extract it faster...
