We are sooooo gonna kick Best Buy's ASS !!!

Why am I up at 1:50 a.m.???

Well, there's a lot going on as we get ready to move into our new studio! We're having our first "Staff" meeting (sounds very important, huh) on Wednesday to start working on our new fall programs. I'm interviewing teachers tomorrow, the studio is 90% finished ... we're just waiting on the building signs and door lettering. YAY!

But here is why I am really posting at 1:52 in the morning...

I just read an Associated Press article that announced Best Buy was going to enter the retail music product business. Guitars, basses, drums, dj equipment, picks, you name it. You can read the full article here...

They plan to convert existing store space into a music area, with stores already converted and doing business in California, Illinois and Minnesota. Other stores will come online this year and into 2009.

At first, I thought, "Watch out Guitar Center, Best Buy is aiming for you".

Then I read further....

And I quote...

"Instruments will be housed in separate rooms and the company also plans to offer group music lessons."

Best Buy is going to offer group music lessons?!?

Oh no they didn't! (Snap Snap Snap)

Let those Geeky Squad types just try to teach a G chord in my town. We'll show them a thing or two about how to teach music!

Don't get me wrong, Best Buy selling music gear is a good thing. Just think how many people, who never would have thought about playing guitar, will decide to check out that cool looking Fender Strat-a-thing-a-ma-jiggy hanging on the wall.

True story time - when I started playing guitar, I could say Stratocaster just fine. But, Les Paul... I thought it was French, as in "Ley Paul". Kind of like Les Miserable...

People at the music store thought I was retarded as I tried to act like I knew all about guitars talking about the new "Ley Pauls" being really hot this year.

Anyway, back to Best Buy.

Yes, more people seeing guitars, touching guitars, having their children beg for a guitar will lead to more people learning how to play.

However, Best Buy --- You have been warned! Try to bring that weak ass game into my town and you're going DOWN Sister  !!!

Who's with me?

That's right, Jason! Stand your ground, man.

I see several reasons why I'm not down with the idea of Best Buy doing music lessons. For one thing, if I were to take my kids in there for their little lesson, I'd end up walking out with a big, flat-screen TV, youknowwhatI'msaying. It's that whole "Lead me not unto temptation" thing.

I'm not sure how I feel about them selling instruments. I guess I struggle with the whole expertise thing. Will it be another flock of frustrated musicians trying to make ends meet while showing off their chops (or choplessness) to the shoppers?

I dunno...I need to mull on this idea for a while.

I actually heard on the news last night that the Best Buy here in Little Rock has no plans so far to do that just yet. But even if they do, I don't think it will get Guitar Center's sales down because I think there is a difference between an electronics store that sells musical equipment, and a full on music store where everyone in there has experience with all the equipment and knows what they're talking about (for the most part)

    Le Paul.....priceless!!
Don't lose sleep over this one. One problem I foresee is how they are going to keep instructors. We started out at a music store where we got the guitar, and the instructor stayed with them for 6 weeks before he went off to college. A year later, after having been on their waiting list for when they got another instructor, I saw a sign out front advertising guitar lessons. I stopped in and asked, but they said they didn't actually have an instructor, what they had was a waiting list. They went out of business before they ever called us back. I wish I'd gotten the repair guy's contact info before they were gone, because he was excellent. But the whole lesson thing was a huge frustration. I can't see a big chain with a reputation like theirs holding onto good instructors. They might be competition for Guitar Center, but they won't be for y'all.

I am with Carol on the temptation issue, but I think they will succeed with the instrument sales like most of the big guys. That certainly does not mean it is going to be a profitable segment. And it does not have to be: temptation, remember?
For lessons, they might have a spark initially but no more.

It will be like buying a guitar from Pep Boys. Only newbies will do it. Eventually the ones that don't stick the thing under the bed will be knocking on your door.

I can't wait to hit the pawn shops and find really good deals on all the instruments pawned by people who impulse bought at Best Buy. Also, there is no way I would be proud to say I got lessons from the Geek Squad!

Look at it this way: Best Buy will get more people interested in playing music and you'll have more students in the long run.

While there is the question of expertise, I think the scary thing is how many people will be attracted to the name and probably cheaper prices.
