Let us know - Why did you pick the guitar/bass/drums?

We're going to start a new topic called "Let us know", a open post for all the readers to comment on the question we throw out there.
The first question is: Why did you pick the guitar/bass/drums? What attracted you to your instrument of choice?
As for me, my dad played guitar and as a child, I remember beating on it from time to time. But I wasn't really interested in guitar until 10th grade.
I was at a friends house hanging out and he had a red electric guitar with a whammy bar and a crappy solid state amp that had the gnarliest distortion you've heard. For some reason, that red guitar said "pick me up and play".
I did...
And thought I sounded good for never having played before...
That is, until my friends yelled from the next room "Turn that crap down - we can't hear the TV".
I can't remember what kind of guitar and amp it was. If I had to bet, I would say a Kramer guitar with a 20w Crate amp.
Anyway - the next thing I know, I'm badgering my uncle to borrow one of his electric guitars, a vintage 60's era Harmony. The guitar itself was nothing spectacular, sound or playability wise, but it was from the 60's. Being the dumb teen that I was, I promptly stripped the paint off and repainted it white. Was I crazy or what???
From that point, I've bought several guitars. In fact, I got my first job sacking groceries at Safeway to buy my first real guitar, a Charvel model 4.
So there is my story, what's yours?

Somewhere along the line I convinced my mom to get my Black Sabbath's Paranoid Album. After that I discovered Metallica and listened to both bands pretty much nonstop. I knew I wanted to play guitar. It took a few months of convincing, but I did get a guitar on Christmas (black washburn).
Since then it's been a strange ride. When it came time to go to college and find some sort of "career" I naturally chose music--to the dismay of my parents, I'm sure. The school i went to gave me a scholarship, so I figured why not. During undergrad I was required to take Classical guitar lessons, and ended up falling in love with that style of music. I graduated with a Bachelor of Music in guitar performance in May of this year, and started my Masters of Music (guitar performance) in August. I'll probably be heading on to doctoral work after this.
It's strange to look back and think about listening to Metallica and playing air guitar.

I remember when I first saw a bass, I thought it was the freakiest thing ever. Four strings and a big neck? What's up with that?
Then I played it. IT didn't just say "Pick me up and play me." It screamed at me: "I'm yours!"
So that's what inspired me.

And if I recall, you and I had our first lessons where I helped convince your parents to let you get that bass instead of a guitar.
Remember that? LOL

I wanted to start playing because I like rock music. I continued playing because I became absorbed in writing.
